Having just turned 40 I’ve come to appreciate the incredible impact staying fit has on both physical and mental health, especially as we get older.

I’ve also realised getting older isn’t as scary as people make it out to be. In fact, I think of it as a privilege. But it also reminded me just how much staying fit matters, not just for looking good but for feeling good, physically and mentally. And here’s the good news, – it’s never too late to start.

Whether you’ve been smashing workouts for years or are just thinking about getting off the couch, you can make a difference in your health at any age. Regular movement can strengthen your body, boost your mood, and keep those joints and muscles working like they should. And you wont need to wait years to reap the rewards, my clients start to see benefits in just a few weeks.  Trust me, your future self will thank you!

For me, strength training has been a game-changer. As we get older, we start losing muscle mass and bone density (thank you, ageing!). But adding a few simple strength exercises can keep you strong and balanced, prevent injuries, and help you keep doing the things you love. Plus, who doesn’t want to be that person who can still carry all the groceries in one trip?

And it’s not just about the body—exercise is pure magic for mental health, too. You know those days when life just feels like a LOT? Moving your body releases those feel-good hormones that reduce stress, ease anxiety, and boost mood. It’s like your own natural happiness pill, and it also helps keep the brain sharp, which is key as we age.

On top of that, fitness can be a total lifesaver if you’re dealing with health issues. For anyone with type 2 diabetes, exercise can help regulate blood sugar levels. Got arthritis? Low-impact activities like swimming can improve mobility and ease joint pain. And heart health? Cardiovascular exercise keeps that ticker strong, reducing the risks of high blood pressure and cholesterol. Think of it like preventative maintenance—like taking care of your body’s engine.

The best part? You don’t need to do anything crazy to get started. Just start moving. Take a walk, try a yoga class, or lift a couple of weights. One step at a time, and soon you’ll feel the changes. At 40, I can tell you I’ve never felt better, and I’m more committed than ever to staying strong, balanced, and ready for anything life throws my way.

So, wherever you’re at right now, remember—it’s never too late to start, and every bit of effort you put in is an investment in a stronger, happier, healthier future. You’ve got this! Get in touch to discuss how you can improve your strength and fitness.
